Randell Smith is being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at next January’s Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), in recognition of his legacy in pioneering global hotel benchmarking. Mr. Smith co-founded Smith Travel Reports in 1985, and its STAR reports have evolved into indispensible industry tools since their first appearance in 1988.

Agnes DeFranco and Stephen LeBruto have been honored with HFTP’s 2009 Paragon Award, given annually to recognize individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to both HFTP and the hospitality industry.
Ms. DeFranco is a professor and assistant vice president of Undergraduate Studies at the Conrad N. Hilton College, University of Houston, is an HFTP Global past president and greatly influenced the growth of HFTP student membership. She has been an advocate for HFTP’s participation in industry research, and frequently contributes her own research findings in The Bottomline magazine and other industry publications.
Recently retired, Mr. LeBruto is a former associate dean and HFTP-endowed professor at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality. He has had a great influence on the CHAE certification by creating the designation’s review course and frequently presenting the review at HFTP events.

Amruth Sivalenka has joined The Rainmaker Group as Vice President of Business Consulting. Mr. Sivalenka has previously held revenue management positions with Disney and Norwegian cruise lines, and most recently was revenue management and decision science director for AIMCO, a real estate investment trust.

IDeaS Revenue Optimization has awarded the first three of its six IDeaS Cornell Revenue Management Scholarships, to:
– Alexandre Teixeira, revenue manager at Grand Hyatt São Paulo
– Crystal Edwards, assistant revenue manager at Governor Hotel
– Fraser Pearce, revenue manager at Lord Elgin Hotel. Scholarship recipients get paid registration to five courses leading to an eCornell Hotel Revenue Management Certificate.

Karen Martin has been hired by EZYield.com as West Coast sales manager, based at a satellite office in Las Vegas. Ms. Martin was previously a sales manager at TravelWorm, Inc., and currently also serves on the San Diego Tourism Coalition.

Hickory Travel Systems (HTS) has launched Hickory UltraConnect in partnership with TravelCLICK, to provide targeted travel agency GDS media advertising delivered exclusively to HTS member agencies. Hotels participating in the Hickory Worldwide Preferred Rate Hotel Program will be able to target unique selling messages directly to HTS booking agents.
TravelCLICK also announced new partnerships with Carlson Wagonlit Travel to offer Preferred Status for participating iHotelier CRS hotels in North America (giving positional screen preference to CWT agents controlled by Carlson) and with Expedia QuickConnect, linking its iHotelier CRS to Expedia QuickConnect to let hotels directly manage inventory, rate, and booking information with more than 70 Expedia sites and hotels.com sites worldwide.

ShermansTravel.com has launched the Sherman Meter, a meta-search tool that rates hotels by tabulating thousands of international and domestic hotel reviews and ratings from sites such as Concierge, Frommer’s, Fodor’s, Trip Advisor, Yelp and Yahoo! Travel, as well as fro its own expert reporters. Each hotel receives a color-coded weighted percentage score between 1 and 100, which corresponds with a color code; the Meter also displays the number of hotel reviews that it used to formulate the overall rating, all of which can be read by users. MTech has integrated its HotSOS task-management system both with Control4’s Suite Systems and with Intelity’s ICE (Interactive Customer Experience) guestroom management applications, passing guests’ special requests made through the guestroom television (via the remote) to HotSOS to trigger work orders to complete the tasks. Service orders for the guestroom are also placed and dispatched through HotSOS in real-time.
