The high tech/high touch debate never ends when launching a new guest service initiative. I was just at a short and very informative conference in Las Vegas, and as it happened the hotel had just launched a very promising healthy-stay initiative. It was fascinating to see, feel and smell the benefits of this. Yes, it involved aromatherapy.
Promoting and improving guests’ health is an admirable approach to standing out these days – Westin has done particularly well with this for some years – and extending the concept to healthy meetings is an excellent thing. How many conference sessions have you attended where the room was stuffy, attention lagged after lunch, and you overate because there was so much food available of generally-appealing but not necessarily healthy varieties? Chocolate chip cookies, anyone? So, so good, but also so effective at putting you to sleep at the end of the afternoon.
Not here. Lights washed the walls with different colors at different times of the day to stimulate our attention. Aromatherapy devices periodically sent a stimulating scent throughout the room. The air was purified to a far higher degree than most hotel rooms, and the food was amazingly good: tasty, healthy and beautifully presented. The same attention to light, air purification and aromatherapy was paid to the guestrooms.
And yet… Despite the best intentions of the approach, it all felt a little distracting, as if we were participants in a laboratory experiment. The lights cast a color wash over our notepads and computers; the aromatherapy definitely perked up the senses, but the machine itself was noisy enough to be an interruption. The air filtration as fine, and we were still very much alert at the end of the afternoon, taking part in the wrap up discussions with enthusiasm. The guestroom equipment was fine (the effects were more subtle and welcome) but the room itself wasn’t welcoming. Too much chrome and hard-edged, angular furniture, more like a cold, high-tech lab than a soothing, welcoming haven.
Nonetheless, it’s an excellent initiative. A little fine tuning in the meeting rooms, folks, a little softer approach to the guestroom décor and this should be a slam dunk winner. Just don’t mess with the food; it was perfect.

Accor has announced a major investment in technology, with a budget of €225 million (approx. $284M) between 2014 and 2018 split 55%/45% between Capital and operating expenditure. 60% of the amount invested will be aimed at improving middle and back-office solutions, with 40% used to expand market share and optimize distribution unit costs.
Its digital strategy covers four customer-focused programs (a mobile app, centralized guest feedback, a “Seamless Journey” approach and a range of business apps), two programs for employees and partners, new IT infrastructure and BI/Analytics, and improvements to its reservation system, accorhotels.com multi-brand booking portal and loyalty program.

HTNG has released its 2014B Web Services specifications. Updates include:
– Customer Profile Version 3.1: Addition of CustomerValue attribute for the Customer.
– Event Notification Version 2.0: reworked to align with W3C’s WS-Eventing standard while maintaining HTNG extensions.
– Intelligent Guest Room Version 3.0: added Command, Status and Event messages so that devices can be controlled, queried or publish changes to their status.
– Point of Sale Version 3.1: corrected namespaces in sample messages.
– Product Distribution Availability Version 4.1: now consistently uses the POS node and InvTypeCode attribute in addition to reworked Update and Get Best Available Rate scenarios.
– Product Distribution Groups Version 2.1: now consistently uses the POS node, adds the MarketCode and SourceOfBusiness attributes, and reworked the use of RoomTypePickupStatus attribute.
– Product Distribution Rates Version 2.2: now consistently uses the POS node.
– Product Distribution Reservations Version 3.1: adds the CustomerValue attribute, takes into account the NameType attribute of the Customer Profile and addresses a few typographical errors.
– Product Distribution Seamless Shop/Book Version 3.1: takes into account the NameType attribute of the Customer Profile as used in other specifications.

Denise Viener has been hired by PAS as Director of Consulting Services. Bringing over 20 years of experience financial, ERP and retail software, Ms. Viener most recently spent over two years as Manager, Client Services at CoreLogic and was Director of Business Systems at Clovis Group. She ran her own financial consulting business for five years after serving as President of financial and POS consultants Groupfive Corporation for 12 years.

Harri Makela has joined Guest-tek as Executive Vice President – Business Development, APAC, based in Bangkok. Mr. Makela has previously worked in management positions with companies including Inter Continental Hotels, MagiNet Interactive, NTT DoCoMo InterTouch and Quadriga Worldwide.

Patrick Andres has been hired by Duetto as Regional Vice-President Asia-Pacific, based in its newly-opened Asia office in Singapore. A veteran of the Asia-Pacific hospitality technology market, Mr. Andres most recently served as the Asia-Pacific Vice President and Managing Director for Travelport. He had earlier built and managed regional operations for Sabre Hospitality Solutions, and earlier oversaw Asia for Micros-Fidelio and served as Director of Business Development for Expedia Travel. He has also worked for SAP and IATA.
Amanda See has joined Duetto as Vice President of Sales, Asia Pacific. With nearly 20 years of experience in channel distribution and marketing, Ms. See was most recently the Senior Director of Business Development for Sabre Hospitality.
Alex Barros is Duetto’s new Vice President of Sales for EMEA, based at its recently-opened offices in London. A loyalty specialist, Mr. Barros most recently served as Director of Sales, Southern Europe & Latin America for SiteMinder. He had earlier served as Director of Business Development EMEA & Brazil for VOILÀ Hotel Rewards & Hospitality Marketing Concepts, and earlier at organizations including Touchdown Marketing and MasterCard Europe.

David Obstler has been hired by TravelClick as Chief Financial Officer. Bringing nearly 30 years of experience in finance, Mr. Obstler was CFO at OpenLink Financial, and earlier was CFO of MSCI Inc. after it acquired Risk Metrics in June 2010, where he had also served as CFO. He had previously acted as CFO at Pinnacor, and held investment banking roles at JP Morgan & Co., Lehman Brothers and Goldman, Sachs & Co.

The 28-room Harbor Winds Hotel in Sheboygan, Wis., has gone live with Agilysys’ cloud-based rGuest Stay guest management system, the first hotel to do so. The property also implemented Agilysys’ rGuest Pay payment gateway, which includes tokenization, PCI-validated point-to-point encryption (P2PE), a payment information proxy (PIP) based on Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG) standards that secures guest data arriving via e-commerce interfaces, and a range of fixed and mobile EMV-ready payment devices.
The 150-room Palm Garden Hotel in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has selected Agilysys’ Visual One GMS and Sales & Catering module.

The 532-room Hotel Nikko San Francisco has deployed StayNTouch’s Rover FrontOffice cloud overlay to Micros Opera GMS to provide mobile check-in and guest assistance. The hotel also deployed StayNTouch’s Zest Web to help pre-engage guests prior to arrival via their smartphones, enabling them to see pictures of rooms, receive upgrade offers and make service requests. Rotana has launched Neorcha, a new Windows tablet-based application to simplify guest check-in and check-out at all 43 of its hotels, eliminating paper registration cards. Guests will be shown a tablet interfaced to the hotel guest management system with all reservation details, terms and conditions; they can then update and agree to all registration details using the tablet and add an electronic signature. Upon check out, bills will be sent to the guests’ email addresses. Guests make their reservation online and check in on a tablet-based kiosk in the hotel lobby, both powered by hetras. The in-room SuitePad tablet serves as a hotel guide, virtual concierge, daily newspaper, surfing station and guest survey tool, and includes a button to book the guest’s next stay at any Ruby property (also powered by hetras). The Munich Derag Livinghotel Am Viktualienmarkt is installing smartphone-operated guestroom door locks from Zaplox. The app (which will be rolled out across other Derag hotels) also provides online check in and check out and information about the hotel and the destination. After check in, guests can download the app and can use it to open their door. The mobile key can also be shared with family or business partners whom the guest wishes to invite into the apartment. The app provides a city guide, orientation with Google Maps and much hotel information. Guests can opt to receive push messages from the hotel, such as for when their room is ready. After a onetime acceptance on the registration form to comply with data protection laws, guests can also use the Zaplox app to check in for all subsequent visits. Derag Livinghotels plans a future enhancement to allow guests to select their own room, use upgrade options and also pay for their stay.
The Hotel Schani Vienna has implemented Zaplox smartphone key app, in conjunction with lock provider Häfele and PMS provider Hetras. IBM has introduced new Analytics software and services to help Travel & Transportation companies mitigate IT security risks, assess their current security posture and resolve potential threats or incoming vulnerabilities. The new offering will use IBM’s QRadar Security Intelligence Platform to create a unified architecture integrating security information, anomaly detection, incident forensics and configuration, as well as event, log and vulnerability management. IBM’s Security AppScan software will enhance web and mobile application security; Security Assessment Services and Industrial Controls Cybersecurity Consulting Services will improve security program management and strengthen regulatory compliance. If a company is under attack, the plan includes access to an Emergency Response Team, which designs and reviews current incident response plans and gives 24/7 access to IBM security experts.
