TOP O’ THE NEWS

  • HITEC review: great show, poor location
  • Winners of the HITEC Favorite Solutions Awards
  • HTNG celebrates fifth anniversary

Another HITEC has come and gone, and this year’s conference showed an energy level not seen for some time. It was a great show, with many new vendors, a noticeable air of optimism and a near-record attendance level. Much kudos to HFTP for making it happen.
Kudos too for trying a different approach this year, with some educational sessions moved to come after the exhibit floor hours in the middle of the day. Switching the last major session (the Hoteliers vs. Vendors panel) until the end of the last day was also very successful in keeping delegates at the show. It would be interesting to see how attendance at the afternoon sessions held up, since many of us who’ve been going for years automatically headed for the exits when the exhibit floor closed, forgetting that sessions were still taking place.
Given that there’s always pressure for more exhibit floor time – there’s simply too much to see in the hours currently allocated – it would be really helpful if the exhibit floor remained open during these afternoon educational sessions. I think it might actually encourage attendance at the afternoon sessions, not take away from them, since delegates might be willing to try a session of possibly minor interest if they knew they could duck out and get back to the exhibits if it didn’t measure up. With the restrictions in place this year it was tempting to pass on the afternoon sessions and head back to the hotel for a break before the evening receptions, a lost opportunity for both delegates and vendors.
While the show was an undoubted success, the same can’t be said of the location. Tired hotels, a lack of local facilities which led to inconvenient and expensive bus and taxi rides to post-show receptions long distances away, an airport apparently without taxis, a sprawling convention center with a surplus of unused space yet which confusingly mixed HITEC’s break-out and main session rooms in with those for another convention immediately adjacent and assigned some meetings to spaces a fifteen minute walk away past dozens of empty rooms, and so on. Even without the obvious comparison to last year’s convenient and well-organized location in Minneapolis, Orlando just didn’t measure up. The spotlight’s definitely on HFTP’s home city of Austin to come through for next years show.
