  • L2’s Digital IQ Index: Hotels ranks digital competency of 57 chains: many making good progress, some slipping behind
  • Hospitality companies’ job growth adding significantly to the economic recovery

L2’s third annual Digital IQ Index: Hotels report evaluating the digital competency of 57 hotel chains highlights the significant benefits open to those who take full advantage of travelers’ soaring interest in mobile devices, on-line reviews, mobile booking and the richness of interactive, video-filled sites. L2 graded hotels’ efforts from Genius to Feeble; W Hotels was the only brand in the Genius category, followed by 21 ranked as Gifted. The lower grades were Average (12 brands), Challenged (21) and Feeble (2). Each chain’s Web site accounted for 40% of its ranking, its Digital Marketing efforts for 30%, Mobile for 20% and Social Media for 10%.
The challenges of keeping up in this fast-changing arena are shown by last year’s three Genius brands slipping to Gifted status this year (W was ranked as Gifted last year). There is overall improvement, though, as the Gifted category increased from 11 last year to 21 this and Average dropped from last year’s 20 to 12. However, more chains are “Challenged” (up from 16 last year) and there are still 2 in the Feeble category. L2 comments that those in the lower rankings are not necessarily doing anything wrong, but they are clearly missing out on significant opportunities to reach and appeal to their guests.
Given that L2 also draws a direct correlation between a brand’s Digital IQ growth and the rise in its stock price, shareholders might also be missing out.
There’s been a lot of discussion about how the economy seems to be on a slow but steady recovery, and the hotel industry has certainly been experiencing better times lately.  A recent article in “Inc.” magazine emphasized the largely unrecognized contribution that the hospitality industry is making to the recovery through increased hiring, in that four hospitality companies are included in its survey of the top 100 companies for job creation from 2008 to 2011.
Kudos, therefore, to developer OTO Development/Palmetto Hospitality Funds (#37), and to First Hospitality Group (#50), Richfield Hospitality (#51) and TravelClick (#78).

Alan Young has been hired by online reputation management vendor TrustYou as its VP of Strategic Partnerships. Mr. Young, who will be based in Ontario, Canada, brings three decades of industry experience, most recently as VP Field Marketing for Infor and earlier as VP, Product Management, Product Marketing and Marketing for Infor Hospitality. He had earlier served in a variety of executive positions and advisory roles at companies such as Apical Resource Group, IBS Software Services, Hotel Booking Solutions Incorporated, Hotel Information Systems and others, including his own consulting company.
Ed Watkins has joined HotelNewsNow as Editor at Large. Mr. Watkins brings long experience in covering the hospitality industry as editor of Lodging Hospitality magazine and from serving an overall 39 years with Penton Media.
Patrick Lewis has joined Swisscom Hospitality Services as a Director of Solutions Architecture. Mr. Lewis has extensive hospitality networking and applications experience with Lorica Solutions and XETA Technologies, among others.
Greg Wutzke has been hired by Swisscom Hospitality Services as a Director of Business Development. Mr. Wutzke brings long experience in HSIA, video and converged networks, including nearly 12 years with Guest-Tek Interactive.
Alberto Santana has been promoted to the new role of Vice President of Latin American Sales at Newmarket International. Mr. Santana will also continue to oversee all global sales activities as well as business development for the MTech division of Newmarket; he was VP Global Sales for MTech when it was acquired by Newmarket.
John Neeley has been promoted to vice president of information technology at Outrigger Enterprises Group.  Mr. Neeley started working for Outrigger in 1991 as a programmer analyst, and has served as director of systems and programming for the past eight years. Prior to joining Outrigger he held several IT posts with Bank of Hawaii and GTE Hawaiian Telephone, as well as adjunct teaching assignments at Hawaii Pacific University.
Mike Montemurro has joined Vacation StoreBuilder, provider of a Software-as-a-Service ecommerce platform for the vacation rental industry, as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Mr. Montemurro was most recently Senior Vice President of Product Management Strategy at Pegasus Solutions, and earlier led the Reservations and Distribution business at TravelClick. He also headed the distribution product business for Galileo International.
Anil Aggarwal, CEO of Milestone Internet Marketing, has been named by The Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) as one of the Top 25 Extraordinary Minds in Hospitality Sales and Marketing for 2012. Mr. Aggarwahl has been with Milestone for over seven years; he was earlier President and CEO of Zeevo, and served five years with VLSI as Marketing Manager.
Michael Cohen has joined OpenWays as Senior Vice President Business Development – Hospitality/North America. Mr. Cohen brings extensive experience in the hospitality technology industry, as well as Internet, digital imaging and enterprise security solutions sectors. He previously served as a senior sales and business development management executive at AT&T, Superclick Networks and PrinterOn, as a management consultant to firms such as Microsoft, and as an international technology commercialization manager for the Korean Ministry of Information Technology.
Olivier Hennion has returned to Quadriga to head Quadriga Morocco, a new division established to support its client Accor’s business in North Africa and as a base for the expansion of Quadriga’s own activities. Mr. Hennion has a strong background in IPTV and network consulting in the hospitality sector, most recently as Managing Director of IT Hospitality S.A. in Casablanca. He had previously served as Managing Partner at Edge Interactive S.A.R.L., also in Casablanca, in senior business development and sales positions during six years with LOCATEL in Paris, and for six years as Area Sales Manager for Quadriga Worldwide in Paris.
Rick Binford has joined The ACTIVE Network as Vice President, Strategic Marketplace Development. With over 20 years’ experience in the meetings and events industry, Mr. Binford most recently served as President of the Event Management Services division at Experient, which he joined in 1999. He had earlier held CEO and COO roles in destination marketing organizations and senior sales and marketing roles with both Northwest Airlines and Republic Airlines.

Indra introduced its integrated, all-in-one Travel Management Suite to U.S. hotels. A full ERP for hospitality, TMS is built on the SAP platform and can be hosted in the cloud or on-premise. The system is modular; each module is also available individually as a stand-alone entity. The suite includes:

Travel Tripper has launched an interactive reporting tool, Reporting Suite, for its RezTrip CRS. The Reporting Suite analyzes reservations data from the web booking engine, mobile booking engine, call center, GDSs and online travel agencies. Key features include:

Olery, a provider of reputation management software, has joined OpeNER, a European research project on the creation of base technologies for culturally-normalized, multilingual Sentiment Analysis and Named Entity Recognition. The OpeNER (Open Polarity Enhanced Named Entity Recognition) project started in July 2012 and will last for two years. Other members include Vicomtech–IK4, VU University Amsterdam, Synthema, University of Basque Country and the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Benchmark Hotels & Resorts has announced the “Top Ten Meeting Trends for 2013″ as reported by its 39 properties.
#1: Steady As She Goes …
Meeting demand is improving at an encouraging pace, giving a positive outlook for 2013 but with caution over long term meeting commitments.
#2: Rates Are On The Rise …
Group rates are advancing commensurately, depending on the location and the market, though meeting planners are still in the driver’s seat.
#3:  Customization is expected…
Meeting planners want the Complete Meeting Package to now mean “customized meeting package”.  Gone are the days when a CMP was one size fits all.
#4: The Pace Is Promising!
Booking pace is encouraging nationwide for 2013 and for 2014.
#5:  Wireless EVERYTHING!
Electronic tablets are replacing note pads & pens as the preferred means of taking notes, requiring multiple charging stations. Meetings are increasingly active with texting and tweeting exchanges with meeting-related content.
#6: Healthy F&B…
Although the Danish trays are still emptied daily, meeting attendees are demanding healthy, gluten free, sustainable cuisine and refreshment break selections, even an authentic local culinary experience.
#7: Higher Security, Smaller Rooms…
Today’s technology and competitive business environment bring a stronger need for secure environments when conducting business and learning off site.  Demand for smaller rooms is also increasing.
#8: Teambuilding Continues Trending Upward…
After years of postponed meetings companies are using teambuilding to revive enthusiasm.  Not so much with ropes and obstacle courses, but more with scavenger hunts, group fitness runs, competitive bowling and culinary cook-offs.
#9: Meeting Planners are Busier…
Fewer have planning as their primary function and so have less time to be educated and even less patience to wait for a response. Communicate with them accordingly via RFP, e-mails and texting.
#10: Hot Business Segments…
Are education (particularly engineering & technology), medical, bio tech, high tech, new media, association, not-for-profits, financial services and the incentive segment. Not hot: government related business.
Bonus Trend: Value, Value, Value…
Plenty to do on property for attendees, up to date fitness & recreation and strong WIFI signals throughout are all expected today.  Social responsibility and sustainability are important, but not game changers – they’re a part of the mix and not an end in themselves.
The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in Los Angeles has chosen PSAV Presentation Services as its event technology partner. The property features 110,000 square feet of meeting space, including 35 event rooms. (www.thebonaventure.com, www.psav.com)
Sabre Hospitality Solutions has developed a Passkey interface with its SynXis Central Reservation System, allowing group reservations booked through Passkey’s GroupMAX platform to be delivered to a hotel’s guest management system electronically. The interface is based on OpenTravel XML specifications and allows reservations to be sent directly and securely to hotels in compliance with PCI standards. Comcast has announced its Comcast Business Hospitality suite consisting of Ethernet, Internet, video and voice services in an integrated package for the hospitality industry. The package includes high-speed Internet connectivity (up to 1 gigabyte for Ethernet service), voice services and up to 60 high-definition channels in each room, with the ability to scale the services quickly to meet growing business needs, seasonal demands and other peak usage periods. The high-speed Internet service will include cloud services from Microsoft and protection from Norton Antivirus, and comes with two modems so that hoteliers can separate traffic for back office use from bandwidth for guests. The HD channels do not require set-top units in guestrooms.
Services include:
• Business Hospitality Ethernet –fast and secure network connectivity with scalable bandwidth from 1 Megabit per second (Mbps) to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) based on guest demand, often by simply placing a phone call.
• Business Hospitality Internet – with download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps.
• Business Hospitality TV – with up to 60 HD channels delivered via a single piece of equipment that enables property managers to remotely manage video feeds.
• Business Hospitality Voice – with high-tech phone lines, call management and other business functions.
• Business Hospitality Trunks – connects legacy PBX equipment with Comcast’s IP network.
FCS Computer Systems announced that its FCS Unicorn Interface and Billing system has been compliance-tested by Avaya for compatibility with Avaya Communication Server 1000 (Avaya CS 1000) 7.5, in addition to previously announced compliance with Avaya Aura Communication Manager 6.2. FCS Unicorn provides both onsite and hosted billing systems for large-scale hotels, integrated resorts and multi-property operations, and interfaces with many guest management systems and other hotel applications.
