It’s a traditional time both for looking back and for making predictions about the coming year, but
I’ll leave that for our next newsletter, the first of the New Year. For now, I want to acknowledge
the hard work and good humor that have made this year as rewarding as it has been.
We started with the optimism that “at least 2009’s behind us; things can only get better from here,”
only to find that despite some signs of improvement we were still mired in a recession and had a lot
of hard digging out to do. It could easily have been a tough, miserable slog, but I’ve found in so
many places that people have tackled the task at hand with a generally upbeat attitude, a sense of
humor and a determinedly “half-full” view.
We’re not out of the woods by a long way, but things are definitely moving up. I just want to say
“Thank You” to everyone I’ve encountered this year whose positive approach and optimism have helped
make the work both productive and enjoyable. Merry Christmas!
Making steady progress with system interoperability, Hotel Technology Next Generation (HTNG) has
released three new specifications, adding features to kiosk interfaces (including upselling, share-
with and multiple-name room check-in, duplicate and replacement key cutting and guest messages),
extending the functionality of payment system interfaces (European Chip and PIN, partial authorization
of prepaid cards) and enabling complex data queries between disparate systems (adding generic, query-
based data transfers to the Open Data eXchange (ODX) spec).
HTNG has also chartered two new workgroups covering entertainment systems (aiming for a standards
based framework for content delivery from a variety of content providers (e.g. cable, satellite) with
regards to hardware and encryption) and cellular phone coverage (better signal coverage for all
cellular carriers within hotels, bridging cellular and Wi-Fi services to let phones roam seamlessly
between them).
OpenTravel published version 2010B of its specification, which includes a new Hotel message covering
inventory challenges from out of sync caches and rising infrastructure/support costs associated with
ever-increasing look-to-book rations. OpenTravel also announced availability of its OpenTravel Schema
Dictionaries, providing structured references of the entire suite of OpenTravel schema.

Keith Harrison of Travelport GDS has received HEDNA’s 2010 Award of Excellence, which honors
individuals who have made exceptional contributions toward the advancement of hotel electronic
distribution and involvement with HEDNA. Elected to the Board of Directors in 2004, Mr. Harrison
served five years on HEDNA’s board as a director and as treasurer, and was an instrumental player in
the HEDNA U educational initiative.
Christian Urbat is joining Carlson as Senior Vice President, Technical Services/Carlson Hotels,
Americas. Formerly at Hyatt International, Mr. Urbat was most recently Vice President of Technical
Services for EMEA, and had earlier worked for Hyatt in various positions in operations and food &
beverage across the U.S., China and Germany.
Bob Kippola has been hired by Milestone Internet Marketing as Director of Business Development. He
was formerly Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Resort Data Processing, where he had served 17
years in various business development and sales positions.

Hilton Worldwide has signed a multi-year agreement with Accenture’s Global Delivery Network for
application development and support services for its property management systems and multi-brand
transactional websites.  Accenture will also provide a global service desk for the company’s hotels.
Egypt’s Travco Group has contracted with MICROS Systems for a complete enterprise software system for
its 135 hotels, which operate under the Jaz, Sol Y Mar, Iberotel and newly acquired Steigenberger
Hotels brands. The rollout will include the OPERA Property Management System, Reservation System,
Customer Information System, Sales Force Automation, Business Intelligence, Sales and Catering and
Materials Control modules, as well as various MICROS restaurant point-of-sale systems depending on the
hotel brand. (,
Agilysys has received Gaming & Leisure magazine’s Platinum G&L Technology Impact Award for its LMS+
property management system. (
Guestline has achieved Gold Certified Partner status in Microsoft’s Partner Program with a competency
in ISV/Software Solutions. Microsoft Gold Certified Partners receive benefits in company access,
training and support. (
TTI Technologies has completed an interface of Scan2PMS with AutoClerk, allowing hotels to capture
guest photo, name, address and other data at check-in and populate it directly into AutoClerk’s
property management systems. (,
SS&C Technologies has acquired TimeShareWare, which will continue to operate under its current name
and with its current team of executives. TimeShareWare has over 500 product installations worldwide;
SS&C provides investment and financial management software and services to the global financial
services industry. (,

Trust International’s yourVoyager CRS is now also available in German, the second (after English) of
several European language versions it is developing. The first hotel customer is Living Hotels.
Whiteboard Labs has launched an iPhone App for its WindsurferCRS, providing hoteliers mobile access to
reports generated via Windsurfer. (
Guestdesk has updated its Internet booking engine, which handles accommodations, entertainment and
golf tee times. Enhancements include client site integration, built-in promotions pages, design and
layout updates, itinerary save/retrieve, an additional services module for selling a la carte items,
Google Analytics and Omniture integration, real-time payment processing through,
multiple language support  for English, Spanish and French, and more. (
Malmaison has signed an extended three-year contract renewal with Pegasus Solutions that adds sister
brand Hotel du Vin’s 14 properties. Malmaison’s and Hotel du Vin’s 27 boutique hotels in the UK will
migrate to Pegasus’ RezView NG. (,
American Express Business Travel has launched its universal aXcess option for corporate traveler
service and support, allowing companies to consolidate their travel servicing through a global center.
Travelers can use a single home-country telephone number to contact a central team with access to
their company’s corporate policies and preferred supplier agreements, and to their own personal travel
preferences and itineraries. The aXcess suite also provides virtual meetings capabilities and mobile
applications. (

international Rosing Information Technology Awards, for its Performance Management Intelligence (PMI)
suite. PMI and d2o are nominated in the categories of Usability, Creativity and IT-Leader of the

Medallia has announced its Medallia Text Analytics application, which analyzes millions of customer
comments from online surveys and other sources and allows users to distribute analysis results
company-wide. MTA is based on the proprietary Medallia Impact Index (MII) technology.
São Paulo’s 416-room Maksoud Plaza Hotel has expanded its agreement with Utell Hotels & Resorts to
include eBuzz Connect social media management. (,
Florida’s Fisher Island Club has implemented UniFocus’ GUESTScope for its 45-unit hotel & resort that
operates as part of the residential community and club.
Tropicana Entertainment has contracted with UniFocus to design and deploy a new Guest Satisfaction
Survey system in its ten casinos and resorts, which include approximately 6,000 rooms across five
states and Aruba.

Revel Systems has added Network Intercept’s Secure-Me software for secure restaurant POS payments and
identity theft protection to its iPad-based POS system. The Secure-Me solution uses verification and
encrypts all data and payment information from end to end.  (,
HotSchedules has released Version 4 of its online employee scheduling and labor management software
for the restaurant industry. Version 4 adds a new user interface with new functionality, with user-
specified permissions to various levels of notes in the Digital Logbook, HotSchedules’ tool for
collecting and managing critical documentation, and allows managers to assign tasks to individuals
from the Digital Logbook and track them to completion. My Plate, HotSchedules’ new employee homepage,
aggregates all content relevant to an employee in one place, including schedules, messages, polls, an
avatar feature and other customizable widgets. My Plate will also pull weather forecasts from
AccuWeather to help users understand how the weather may impact the customer count for that day
through insights into how weather has affected business in the past. (

Internet Access services. (,
Intelity has added Room Control integration to its ICE (Interactive Customer Experience) hotel
software application. When integrated with a hotel’s room control systems, ICE allows guests to
adjust their guestroom’s lighting, drapes and climate (heat and air conditioning) from a touch screen
or laptop. Hotels can also use ICE to set the guest room controls at check-in and after check out,
with consequent energy savings, as well as pre-set the controls to a guest’s known preferences.
The Wingate by Wyndham Hotel – Frisco has selected XETA Technologies’ suite of hospitality
communications services, including wired and wireless High Speed Internet Access, a PBX system and
low-voltage cabling for voice and data services for hotel guests and staff. The hotel is scheduled to
open in January 2011. (,
Accor has extended its global TV supply partnership with Philips for three years.

The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort has implemented Yellow Dog Software’s inventory system to manage
all of its retail operations, including 3 golf pro shops, a spa, health club, tennis pro shop, toy
store and others.  Yellow Dog manages retail inventory in eleven retail locations across the property,
and is integrated with three Point of Sale systems to provide a single property-wide inventory

ASSA ABLOY received an Editor’s Choice Award in the Green Technology category at the International
Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show (IHMRS) in New York, for its Orion by VingCard Elsafe occupancy-sensing
energy management system. When used in conjunction with VingCard’s VISIONLINE wireless RF-online
electronic locking system, Orion communicates with other in-room systems such as locks, safes, lights
and the room’s thermostat, but can be used in any hotel regardless of door lock system.
Vingcard Elsafe also previewed its Integrated Room Control Dashboard, which allows hotels to compare
current performance with past results, estimate trends and adjust operations accordingly. The
dashboard integrates in-room electronic systems and status including occupancy, locks, safes, lighting
and energy management, and lets hotels manage subsystems remotely over the hotel LAN or web-based
IQware released its IQqms Quality Management System for scheduling, managing, analyzing and reporting
on all aspects of maintenance, including preventive maintenance, work orders, maintenance requests,
inventory, predictive maintenance and owner invoicing. The system also helps hotels track the
changing value of each of its assets and manage their life cycles.  (
