It’s been quite a year. Not what most of us had hoped for in terms of economic recovery, to be sure, but there are promising signs that businesses are beginning to be more optimistic about the future, and that travel is on the rise. Certainly if you judge by the number of press releases reported below, vendors are ending the year with a real surge!
So all I’ll say at this holiday time is this: may our wishes for good things be realized, and may we be filled with understanding, see the good in others and work together to bring improvement to our industry and the world. However you celebrate the season, may it be filled with happiness.

Eric Orkin has joined productivity management vendor d2o as Chief of Research and Development. Co-founder of Delphi Management Systems and OPUS2 Revenue Technologies, Mr. Orkin is a member of the HFTP Hospitality Technology Hall of Fame.
Bernard Ellis has joined d2o as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Mr. Ellis brings twenty years of experience in hotel revenue management, distribution and operations, most recently as IDeaS’ Managing Director for the Americas. He held earlier held executive roles with Micros-Fidelio and then SynXis, now part of Sabre Hospitality Solutions.

Chris Hall has been hired by M3 Hotel Accounting as M3 Link Sales Executive. With over fifteen years of hospitality industry experience, Mr. Hall was most recently Territory Sales Manager with U.S. Foodservice. He had earlier held a variety of sales and operations roles with several USA hotels, including serving as Sales Manager for Hilton, Assistant General Manager for Radisson and Banquet Manager for Crowne Plaza.  Mr. Hall also created his own restaurant in Australia, the Baja Mexican Grill, and served as Owner and General Manager until selling the concept to a larger company in 2004.

Robert Arnold has been appointed Vice President of Sales at VIZERGY.  Mr. Arnold brings over ten years of experience in the hotel industry and twelve in e-commerce and Internet marketing.  Most recently, he served as Vice President, Worldwide Sales for TIG Global; before that he held senior leadership positions with TravelClick.

Computerworld magazine has named Rob Webb, Chief Information Officer for Hilton Worldwide, to its “Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2012” in recognition of his leading the Hilton Innovation Collaborative, a series of multi-year agreements with IBM, AT&T, Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services and Microsoft to provide technology infrastructure, high speed network services, reservation systems, property systems, corporate systems, transactional website development and support services. Mr. Webb joined Hilton in 2009, and had earlier held global CIO roles for Equifax and General Electric.

Glenn Garland has been appointed to Telkonet’s board of directors. Currently president of CLEAResult, an energy optimization firm, Mr. Garland has been in the energy efficiency industry for over 25 years. He managed the marketing, outreach, and implementation for several U.S. EPA national ENERGY STAR® programs as well as serving as its National Implementation Manager for the ENERGY STAR Buildings and Green Lights® Partnership and the ENERGY STAR HVAC Team.

Lindner Hotels and Resorts has adopted MICROS Systems’ centralized systems, moving its 32 properties to a private cloud in the MICROS Data Center in Frankfurt, Germany to run MICROS’ OPERA and myfidelio.net systems.

Webjet Limited, Australia and New Zealand’s largest online travel agent, has signed with VFM Leonardo for hotel visual media and media display technology. VFM Leonardo will provide Webjet with a pop-up version of its VPowered Multi-Media Player for displaying hotel images on Webjet’s sites, including videos and 360° virtual tours. Hotel chains will manage images for Webjet directly through their existing VScape Digital Asset Management license.
VFM Leonardo has officially launched its VBrochure Facebook Apps Suite, an expanded set of apps for hotel Facebook pages. The Suite includes a Built-in Booking widget integrated with major brands’ booking engines.

Scandinavia’s First Hotels will be the pilot chain for Easy (Ez) Revenue Management Solutions’ (EasyRMS’) new Ez-LITE application, developed for smaller hotels or those at the lower echelon. First Hotels manages 57 properties in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
BHG – Brazil Hospitality Group, the third largest hotel company in Brazil, has contracted with EzRMS for 20 of its 36 properties.  BHG operates Golden Tulip Hospitality brands Royal Tulip, Golden Tulip and Tulip Inn. EzRMS implementation will start with Golden Tulip Regente, Golden Tulip Copacabana, Golden Tulip Continental and Royal Tulip Rio de Janeiro, all in Rio, this year; the remaining sixteen will start early in 2012. All properties are implementing the EzRMS Core Module, Ez-QUOTE, Ez-COMPETE and Ez-REGION, and include a two-way interface to their Hogatex/Starlight PMS.

PSAV Presentation Services is now offering Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) and BGV A3 Testing to its clients in the United Kingdom and Germany respectively to help them comply with these regulations, which require that all buildings open to the public test all power outlets and power equipment on a bi-annual or annual basis. This involves testing cables, sockets, plugs, leads and any other power carrying interconnects, along with the appliances themselves, in order to establish that a continuous ground is maintained when a charge is given.
